ARTIST PROFILE Minnie Pwerle Minnie Pwerle was born prior to 1920 (c. 1910) on the banks of the Sandover River- 350 kilometres northeast of Alice Springs. Her country was Atnwengerrp and her language was Anmatyerre and Alyawarr. Minnie was one of six children and went on to become the mother of seven children including International artist Barbara Weir. She passed away peacefully 18th March 2006 at her home in Atnwengerrp with her family. Minnie commenced painting on canvas in 1999 - and was immediately noticed by Galleries and Collectors worldwide - after a lifetime of ceremonial body painting. Body paint designs are worn to represent Dreamings and various symbols are specific to particular rituals. Minnie then started painting batiks in the 1980's completing works for the Robert Holmes a Court Collection. Minnie’s paintings reflect her country- the bushtucker so important to her desert heritage and the women’s ceremonial body paint inherent in her culture. The circular design of the Bush Melon Less

ARTIST’S PROFILEThe Pwerle Sisters(Molly- Emily- Galya) When Minnie Pwerle passed away in March 2006- she left a legacy of artworks memorable for their amazing colour and flowing imagery. Three of her sisters are carrying on the tradition of Minnie’s depiction of the art of Utopia- each with their own individual style but all boldly displaying the same inspiration and zest for art and their culture and love of their country. In 2004 Molly- Emily and Galya Pwerle began painting together with their famous sister Minnie. Aged from 80-90 they- like Minnie- have lived a Traditional life in their desert homeland of Irrultja- a tiny settlement in Utopia of about 100 people- with very little real exposure to the rigours of western culture. Each lady produces artworks possessing an illusive magic hard to define- full of colour and movement and fluid execution. Collectors world-wide are still amazed- as they were with the works of the late Emily Kngwarreye and Minnie- that such modern images could possibly Less

ARTIST PROFILE Rusty Peters Rusty Peters was born on Springvale Station- East Kimberley- Western Australia in 1935. He grew up and worked as a stockman on Springvale- which is the content of many of his works. The family relocated to Mabel Downs Station after his father was lost in a riding accident- and Rusty continued as a stockman and valued horse-breaker. The family then moved to the fledgling Turkey Creek Community (now Warmun) where Rusty took his place with the Kitja Elders in passing on the culture to the young boys. He worked with Hector Jandany and George Mung Mung who along with Jack Britten and Paddy Jampinji were to become the First Generation Ochre artists- all of whom are now deceased. In 1989 he moved to Kununurra and worked at Waringarri Aboriginal Art Centre- the first in the East Kimberley area. He assisted artists- in particular Rover Thomas (dcsd.) and learned the many facets of the art trade whilst painting infrequently. He participated in printmaking workshops with Waringarri. He Less

ARTISTS DESCRIPTION (as told to her by her Father- Churchill Cann) This is right in the middle of new and old Texas Downs Station homesteads. It is rich blacksoil grazing country- with mountains all around. Limestone country to the southeast and northwest- and a tributary of the big Ord River called Spring Creek runs right through this place with lots of little creeks running into it. There are two large round rocks which are easily seen way down to the south of Red Butte and the stockmen used them as landmarks when they were mustering cattle. The Ngarrangkarni (Dreaming) story is that the rocks represent a man and woman who had been through Law (young people)- and travelled to this part of the country. They were husband and wife- and even though they were from Alice Downs way- they liked this place and decided to stay for a good while. They raised their children around these parts and after the children left- the man and woman stayed a bit longer and made the Law for this land. The rocks tell the story Less

ARTIST PROFILE Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi Gabriella was born in 1967 at Mt Allan- Northern Territory. She is the eldest daughter of Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri- one of the most famous of our Australian Artists (deceased 2002). She began painting at an early age- under the tuition of her famous father and often collaborated with him- producing important works. The content of Gabriella's paintings is the Dreaming stories handed down to her from her paternal grandmother- Long Rose Nungala and the other senior women who taught her in her formative years - these include Grandmother's Dreaming- Seven Sisters Dreaming (Milky Way)- Goanna- Bush Tucker and Serpent Dreamings of her Anmatyerre heritage. She was the youngest artist to be awarded the prestigious Alice Springs Art Prize whilst still studying at Yirara College at age 16. Her natural talent and knowledge of the women's dreaming stories was enhanced technically by her association with the grass roots painters of Papunya Tula - her father's brothe Less

ARTIST PROFILE Jock Mosquito Jock was born on Nicholson Station bordering on desert country and situated over the Northern Territory border from Kununurra (East Kimberley) where Jock now resides (Kununurra and Warmun Community). He spent his working life based at Nicholson- and like other stockmen of his day- mustered on surrounding stations – the best of his profession were valued and the station owners provided them with as much work as they wished as mustering time varied throughout the region. He did not ever know his mother – his father and grandmother “grew him up” (raised him). He had the opportunity to go to Beagle Bay for schooling- but his father and grandmother did not wish him to go – a fact which he has regretted all his life. Jock has often commented “If I had spent more time in school than the stockcamp- I would be a lot better off”. With no formal education- Jock has avidly participated in important cultural and business matters in his country. He was Chairperson of Less

ARTIST PROFILE Alan Griffiths Alan resides in Kununurra with his wife Peggy- and both are renowned artists. He has been painting since the early 1980’s and his talent is recognised Australia-wide and Internationally. He paints both for Waringarri Art Centre and as an independent artist. He has been fortunate in that he is one of a few selected artists whose attributes were outstanding enough to gain recognition early in the Aboriginal Art movement – with Peggy- he exhibited with and participated in printmaking programmes alongside some of the most successful ochre artists in the East Kimberley region – Jack Britten- Queenie McKenzie- Rover Thomas (all deceased). His fastidious approach to his work has gained him an enviable reputation- commanding high prices for his paintings. Alan’s limited edition prints of his own corroboree “Bali Bali Balga Joonba” were instantly successful- being collected by Parliament House. He and Peggy were invited to present this corroboree at the ATSIC Art Awards Less

ARTIST PROFILE Paddy & Family Paddy Carlton c. 1926 – 2006 Paddy Carlton was one of the most famous painters of the East Kimberley Region. He was born on Legune Station in c. 1926 and worked- as many of the painters in this area did- on cattle stations throughout the Kimberley and Northern Territory. Paddy took his surname from Carlton Hill Station. Paddy was a well respected Elder of his Community and resided in Kununurra with his extended family until he passed in 2006. He recalled his elders teaching him cave painting- storytelling and the culture he passed on to the young ones. In the last few years prior to his passing- Paddy had been teaching his family his original dot-art style- and both Maryanne and Penelope Paddy are becoming artists in their own right. Paddy’s paintings depict the cave art of his land- and he was renowned as a specialist dot artist- always using ochre pigment. His subject matter extended from what he saw in the caves to animals – crocodiles- snakes- and his famous t Less

ARTIST PROFILE Katie Cox Katie was born at Texas Downs Station and was fortunate to have an education at Beagle Bay. She relocated to Warmun after her schooling and began teaching the children on the Community – an occupation which she is still involved with today. Katie comes from a family of talented artists – her aunts Lena Nyadbi and Goody Barrett introduced her to painting- and she was encouraged by her brother- International Artist Churchill Cann- and other established artists. Her husband is renowned artist- Tommy Carroll. Katie not only has a style of her own which is varied- bold and yet often whimsical (as in her “Devil Dog” work)- but she is meticulous in method and fastidious in detail. Her paintings are invariably accompanied by a Ngarrangkarni (Dreamtime) story. She has participated in many Exhibitions- collected by the National Gallery of Australia and Parliament House Collection - most definitely a collectable artist for the investor or those who enjoy a beautiful piece of ar Less

ARTIST PROFILE Mark Nodea Mark was born in Derby in 1968. He currently resides in Kununurra and is former Chairperson of the Warmun Art Centre. Mark is well educated and a wonderful ambassador for his Community and the traditional ochre art of the area. He has been taught the stories of his land by his mother- artist Nancy Nodea- and paints her country- Texas Downs- and his father’s country around Cherabun Station. Mark's father is Hanson Boxer- a Walmajarrie man- and this enables Mark to extend his content to embrace both Kitja land and his father's country around Yakanarra (an excision of Go Go Station via Fitzroy Crossing) and Cherabun Station. His minimal and sometimes flamboyant style gives him scope for large works. Mark's design won the 2002 Royal Australian Mint International Award for Pure Silver Collector Coin. The Royal Australian Mint has only released ten such coins since 1983. He has participated in Group Exhibitions and his first Solo in September 2003 at the prestigious Alison Kel Less
