When it comes to brands that stand the test of time, they don't often get bigger than Westinghouse Electrical. The Pennsylvania-based company was incorporated in 1886 and now employees more than 120,000 employees and turns over more than $10 billion in a year. It's a publicly listed company that produces a massive raft of products. This is one of the biggest electronics manufacturers in the US which offer products for home use, for defense, for power generation and for manufacturers. The company has a subsidiary that manufactures office furniture, as well as another subsidiary in broadcasting. The company once existed only in the mind of George Westinghouse, an engineer who, at 22 founded the company so that he could enter into electronics. He came up with the first functional Alternating Current system and succeeded. It soon became clear that there could be no progress without some form of working agreement with Edison General Electric because the two competitors were each fearful of launching a product only to attract a lawsuit for patent infringement from the other. The company changed hands due to cash problems in the early 1910s. Westinghouse passed away in 1914. It provided wireless communication in that era, and participated in the production of early transistor radios. Since the early 1920s, the company has run several radio stations in different US locations. Westinghouse began producing household electronics with elevators, washing machines and fridges in the 1930s. In fact, the first automatic electric iron introduced in 1924, came from Westinghouse. After the depression, Westinghouse ventured into lucrative military electronics, helping the military take advantage of radar to get warning signals. The same radar technoglogy has been used to control air traffic by airports. Today the company has moved swiftly into nuclear power, becoming a major producer of equipment for a new generation of nuclear energy. Westinghouse is responsible for the first nuclear power plant in the US, which was established in 1957. It has created reactors for the US Navy and jets for the air force. Westinghouse still has a strong presence in broadcasting, advertising, military equipment and other industries. The company has weathered many storms and appears to still be going strong.
