I have got a little crush on Orange Shiraz. It is not the biggest or baddest Shiraz with more elegance than your everyday South Australian example but it delivours loads of spicy, earthy personality. If you like Shiraz with subtlety and character then this is most certainly your man.

The Dreadnought Syrah sounds a little intimidating but we believe it sums up the power and precision of this wine. This pure Shiraz is grown on some of the steepest vines on Waiheke Island in New Zealand. This is a fragrant and wild style of Shiraz made in an old world style imbued with white pepper and spice, some savoury game characters and nicely ripe tannins and a rich, soft palate of spice with incredible line and length.

There’s a fair chance that if you label your Shiraz Syrah then it’s made in the European style and that’s exactly what the De Bortoli’s do. It’s a classic example of drawing on the French influence but making a wine that’s Australian at heart. This is serious stuff and a savoury style that demands food. It’s intensely aromatic with a core of spicy plum and earthy notes before a structured palate of supple tannins. It finishes long with a spicy persistence and would suit a dish of roast lamb.

You can bet your bottom dollar that a producer who calls his Shiraz Syrah is damn serious about what’s in the bottle. Generally by using the French word Syrah for Shiraz, means it’s made in the old world style. The wine is completely expressive of place thanks to the stony soils that inhabit the vineyard. It shows black fruits and white pepper as well as licorice before a well- balanced and structured palate with elegantly woven tannins.

What’s the difference between Shiraz and Syrah? Nothing really, the same grape but it’s the French way to pronounce it and there are a few producers in Oz who are starting to make wines in the French mould and label it thus. This is quite a broody and powerful expression of Shiraz, it exhibits dark fruits, mixed spice and a vein of pepper. It’s an explosion of flavour on the fulsome palate showing bright fruit mixed with a savoury complexity.

Balmoral Syrah, or Shiraz, is hand picked from a selection of premium sites in McLaren Vale. It offers intense depth of flavour and complex peppery notes, balanced by fine acidity and tannin structure.

It wasn’t long ago, in the wake of the Rainbow Warrior bombing, that most Kiwis boycotted Champagne, Cognac, Citroens and anything else made in France. TWO EIGHTS 2004 VICTORIA SHIRAZ This Two Eights Shiraz has a complex aromas displaying a rich bouquet of blackcurrant and plum with oak integration. The palate is intense with a long finish. The 2004 vintage in Victoria was marked by very cool and dry conditions resulting in a late ripening in perfectly dry conditions. As a result, the Pyrenees produced average size crops with great ripe flavours. The fruit structure is outstanding and are more subtle than previous vintages and more approachable when young.
