Kumeu River Pinot Gris  2009.   R EGION: Kumeu, Auckland NZ Alc 13.5% Winemaker : Michael Brajkovich, MW The 2009 vintage is our twelfth vintage of Pinot Gris and with the vines getting older we are seeing more complexity each year. Some light rain a few weeks before the grapes were due to be picked introduced some botrytis (noble rot), but fortunately this dried off before harvest and only added to the richness and complexity of the grape juice. The resulting wine is an excellent example of Pinot Gris. The aromas have typical peach and stone fruit notes tinged with the floral perfume that we have come to expect from Pinot Gris. Tyrrells Special Aged Tawny Port. TASTING NOTES: Special Aged Tawny is showing medium amber/brown colours and is in brilliant condition. The raisin like nose is given more intensity by a slight spirit lift. The palate has rich fruit and good acid, which provides a well balanced finish. A vibrant and spritzy palate with musk, spice and floral flavours flowing through to a sweet mid palate and a clean fresh finish. Components of Black Muscat and Muscat Gordo Blanco are harvested from sun drenched vineyards in Swan Hill which are managed to produce fully ripe grapes bursting with luscious flavours. The bunches are crushed to press and soaked for a few hours to gain colour, pressed to tank and cold settled. The excellent quality of the fruit at vintage led to the objective of making a fresh, lightly wooded wine with a degree of oak complexity. Hence, only free run juice was drawn after gentle airbag pressing and then cold settled at low temperatures before fermentation with selected yeast strains. Fermentation was arrested just prior to dryness, giving a wine with some residual fruit sweetness. It was then racked and aged on its yeast lees in a combination of French and American oak barrels to add further complexity.

This wine is vibrant red with purple hues, which is a reflection of the bright fruit characters sought in this style of wine.
