Exceptionally crisp, clear sound. Little flat on the midrange.
Date of Review: Apr 7, 2007
The Bottom Line: Great clear, crisp sound, not "tinny" or muddy. Subwoofer overpowers the system slightly. The midrange could use a boost to balance it slightly.
These speakers are very stylish and small. The remote makes them very easy to use. Without the remote, the "dial/button" adjustment is particularly awkward. It's a little tricky to adjust the sound, unless your media player has a graphic equalizer. Then, a lot of people might not care about that, and if it's just good sound you want, these will provide just that.
1) Controls: The manual control consists of a 3" square block containing one main "dial" surrounded by LED buttons for volume, bass, treble, sfx, loud (no "mid range"). You select the option you want to adjust then manually turn the dial to adjust. I feel that this would be better if at least the volume was a seperate "knob". It also has jacks for earphones and aux--which I assume is to hook up another set of speakers or MP3.
SFX is a feature that "expands" the music from stereo to pseudo-surround. LOUD boosts the subwoofer.
I prefer the sleek little remote (2"x 4" angled, with rubber pads, designed to just sit near your keyboard for easy adjustment)that has seperate push pads for these functions (the volume is also the +/- to adjust base/treble. It's also the on/off & has a reset that returns all settings to basic default.
2) The 2 satellite speakers are very small, 3"x3" square bases and a mere 6" tall, triangular in shape. For anyone with the ol' school "bricks" that had short connecting cords (not to mention terrible, dixie cup sound) like I had, they are amazing. They DO give an incredible amount of crisp, clear sound for their size. I must admit, I mostly listen to online "chillout", "deep house" or "techno", which is far more synthesized/complex than standard rock (which I also listen to-I don't want to step on anyone's toes....) That is why I know these have exceptionally clear, crisp sound. I can distinctly hear every "tst" sound of the synthesized maraccas or high hat brush, without it becoming the annoying "mosquito-ish" sound cheap speakers produce for treble and clear bass. (hopefully someone else out there understands what I mean by that, I don't have any other way to describe that annoying "tinny" sound).
3) The subwoofer is nicely designed, looks good and gives great sound. It's 8"x8"x14" tall. It's very easy to hook up. From the default settings, this is pretty much the bass of the system and must (to my taste) be turned down quite a bit to balance the rest of the sound. I think that even those who like a lot of bass will find that the subwoofer overwhelms the system. But, this system is not made for "volume".
4) This system is great for listening to music, but will not give a "surround sound" effect-at all. It does give a great stereo effect, which is what it's designed for.
5) It was very easy to hook up, and gives a clear, crisp sound that if (like me) you want to listen to your favorite online music without being stuck in front of the PC (or while surfing)you can adjust it to have great sound throughout your house. If, however, you are looking to blast your favorite tunes for a party, this probably isn't right for you.
If you use these speakers in conjunction with a media player that has a "graphic equalizer" you can easily adjust the sound to suit your taste.
