Beware of the rebates

Date of Review: Mar 6, 2006

The Bottom Line:  Although it works well, look at Dymo for a better value, and wider variety of labels that is more readily available locally.
Note that this printer only takes Brother DK tapes and the selection is somewhat limited. Changing tapes is a breeze. I've been using the continuous roll waterproof tapes and they work well, but are expensive and somewhat hard to find. The software on the CD was outdated. Don't bother installing it and download the latest from the Brother Web site. The new P-Touch software is fun to use, and printing is quick.

There is a twenty dollar rebate that the manufacturer has been offering which makes this printer very attractive. Unfortunately, Parago claims that they do not have my submitted rebate materials, and cannot accommodate me because the deadline has passed. They tell you to wait 6 weeks before checking, yet it is clearly after the deadline. I've had problems in the past with Parago mishandling rebates, but this is the first time they've claimed to not have it at all and refused to accommodate me. I type the addresses on my envelopes and I've never had anything else lost in the mail in all my years. Note that there is a blurb at the bottom of the rebate form about using certified or registered mail. Sounds like it's happened numerous times before. This is clearly a policy set by Brother for Parago to follow.

Without the rebate, the Dymo that I was also considering would've been the better choice. Dymo supplies are more readily available in greater variety from the local office supply stores.

Pros
Fast printing. Easy tape changes. Latest P-Touch software is fun to use.
Cons
Limited label selection. Poor rebate handling makes other label printers a better value.
