This vacuum is so good that it sucks!
Date of Review: Mar 23, 2007
The Bottom Line: This item became so hot from word of mouth. Buy it but watch for the build up issue.
We've had numerous vacuums over the years. We've had them fall apart or need constant belt, filter and bag changes. With a 2 year old and renting, I knew we had to get a vacuum that could handle the demand.
I started hearing great things about the Dysons but the price tag was more than we wanted to pay. We found a refurb on Amazon for an amazing price and we bit. We've had our Dyson for 8 months.
Design
I love the design of this vacuum. It is durable, light and well designed. My 2 yo son loves this vacuum and uses it every day. He knocks it over, pulls off parts and pulls on the hose. It has taken every beating he has given it with no problem.
The vacuum is designed for easy movement of carrying the unit around (via the handle on the front of the unit) and easy movement around the floors. My 2 yo easily vacuums with this unit.
The on/off button in on the top of the unit making the unit very easy to turn on and off.
Suction
It actually never loses suction. Many times while using the hose, I have to pull it off of the carpeting. It is that strong. It really cleans the carpeting well. I can throw almost anything at it without problem. My warning is to keep it away from strings. It will entwine around the brush (this is standard with any vacuum).
Attachments
This vacuum comes with three attachments that connect to the handle or hose (the handle can be removed where the attachment is attached directly to the hose). The first is a drapery cleaner, the second is a crevice cleaner and the third is a brush. I have only really used the brush and it works great on cleaning corners, furniture, ceilings, cars, etc. The great thing about Dyson is that they are always making attachments that can be used for this model (duster, mattress cleaner for example).
Dust bin
I absolutely think how Dyson releases the dirt into the garbage is excellent. You release the bin (which is also where two of the attachments are housed for easy access) from the vacuum and release the bottom of the canister. This is done by an easy to access button.
Once the items are discarded, you manually close the bottom and return it to the vacuum.
I have experienced items getting stuck in the upper chambers of the bin where I've had to clean it with my hands. I have also had to clean the bottom door at times.
Uses
This vacuum is not just a vacuum for us. It has replaced our broom and dustpan. I use it to initially pick up items in both the bathroom and kitchen before I clean.
I also use it to clean my car.
Downside
I am finding that my Dyson is collecting dirt in the cervices and building up near the brush. Therefore if I do not clean it periodically, the brush part becomes jammed and does not pick up. This is something that we need to address with Dyson.
Other information
-Very long electrical plug
-7ft long hose
-This vacuum is not all one piece. You can remove parts to clear out jams
-No belts or bags. Just one HEPA filter that needs to be cleaned 2x a year.
