Got a dog? Or cat? Get a Dyson!
Date of Review: Jun 6, 2006
The Bottom Line: Have furry pets running loose in your house? get a Dyson. dump the bags.
I'll never forget when my close friends had their first child and like clockwork, the mom said, "Now we're gonna buy a Volvo!" Had a kid, had to have that safe, safe car. I thought, "How ridiculous!" (of course, I was childless at the time).
Well, when your friends and relatives get the dog or cat of their dreams and then say, "Now we're gonna buy a DYSON!" give them a break, because when you have a pet that literally rains fur (like my beautiful white Siberian Husky) and lives indoors, you need a really sucky vacuum.
Suck, it does. In droves. However, it is for other reasons that I love this thing. After all, my Eureka boss 4870 sucks very well, in fact as well, WHEN THE BAG IS BRAND NEW. it is after a couple of passes over the carpet that things start to change, big time.
It really boils down to this: For how much longer can you get bags for your old vacuum, and how often do you want to buy/replace those bags. with a big shedding dog in the house, I vacuum every day, twice on weekend days. I could easily go through 3 bags a week. My Eureka lost suction when the bag was only 1/3 full, so I did replace the bag fairly often. I was having difficulty finding the bags and determined that I was paying a lot of money on new bags. Things were fine pre - dog, but now...
I also did not realize how hard the Eureka was to wrestle around. The Dyson maneuvers so easily, even with all its suction it is very light on its feet. I love to use it and watch the dog fur cyclone around in the bin. I really love that when I'm done, I empty the bin and its good to go for next time.
the bin is easy to empty, though to get it really clean inside you may experience some dust once in a while.
I too have experienced that noise, and wondered if it was a problem with my particular unit since it was a floor sample at Linens and Things (40% off. wow, what a deal!)
Like others, I am not impressed with the attachments, if I hook the upholstery tool directly to the hose, it often comes off in cleaning. You would think for all the engineering that supposedly went into this thing, Mr. Dyson could do better with the attachments.
However, for cleaning the pet hair off the carpets, which is what I bought it to do, it does a wonderful job. And the air smells clean and not dusty when I'm done, too.
