Great speakers for PC use
Date of Review: Nov 12, 2007
The Bottom Line: I would recommend the Creature II to anyone who wants decent audio from a Mac/PC. Great quality for the price.
I bought the JBL Creature II speakers for my Apple laptop to be able to listen to podcasts and music while working. That means that I was looking for an all-round speaker system to play audio at low to medium volume. The system consists of a sub-woofer and two satellite speakers. There are a few things to pay attention to when setting up the Creature II. First of all, you have to connect the speaker cables in the appropriate places as each plug has a unique shape, so it matters that the right speaker cable is plugged in the correct outlet. The audio is controlled on the right speaker using separate plus and minus buttons. These controls are not sensitive enough, and I prefer controlling the volume from the Mac. The sub-woofer controls read 'bass' and 'treble,' but they also control volume, so if you turn off the base, the woofer goes silent. Now that you are set up, let's review the audio quality. At low to medium volume, this system sounds excellent. You will be amazed how clear the treble is, and the spoken word sounds particularly good. The Creature handles all kinds of music types well. However, playing a classical CD loudly, I could clearly hear that the system's mid range is lacking. Ergo, this system is fine for audio listening at the machine, but it does not replace the stereo for advanced listeners. For others, you hook up your iPod, TV or any other device with audio out to this system.
