Very good speakers at a great price

Date of Review: Aug 12, 2007

The Bottom Line:  If you are looking for very high end sound, buy a 5 piece speaker sound system for many hundreds of dollars. For the money, this is a great speaker system.
I reviewed several sites before buying these speakers. CNET.com, Epinions, ZDNET.com among others. The major drawback that I was able to discern from those users who were unhappy related mainly to the midrange problem. Others, who responded to these people discussed turning up the subwoofer. I don't have that big a room as one user suggested is important, but what I did was put the woofer down on the floor and let the sound fill the room from its location. I have put it through the paces with blues, jazz, classical and rock, even movies. Depending upon the genre of music and your taste, it is necessary to tweak the bass dial from the 10 o'clock all the way to the 2 or 3 o'clock position. When you listen to podcasts, the bass can be pretty overpowering with certain downloads unless you crank the bass way down.
I am impressed with the channel separation. Try to separate your high frequency tweaters as much as you can, you'll be impressed with the stereo.
Remember, these speakers cost around $120 and have 3 speakers. I've listened to the Harman Kardan 3 piece set, the JBL cone speakers. Even the comparable Bose companion 3 speakers, that cost a whole lot more, don't give you much more crispness.
I am using the speakers with a new iMac with Intel chip, via iTunes. Setup is a breeze and I had no problems. Find a good place for the subwoofer: it is 13" deep, 10" wide and 10" high.

Pros
Clear, crisp sound. Good balance in the low, high and midrange.
Cons
Subwoofer is a beast.
