Perfect speakers for your office or bedroom!
Date of Review: Sep 18, 2006
The Bottom Line: The easiest and most inexpensive way I've found to listen to my MP3 player at work or home.
I am obsessed with listening to my iPod wherever I go, but I cannot stand wearing headphones. Therefore, I have a car adapter and use a jogging stroller with speakers to accommodate MP3 players. When I found these Sony SRS-P7 Computer Speakers I snapped them up thinking they'd be perfect for using my iPod at work. And, as I tell my husband all the time, I was right!
Basic features of the Sony SRS-P7 Computer Speakers
The Sony SRS-P7 Computer Speakers supply a passive speaker system, meaning that it requires no batteries or other power source to run. The system comes with 2 small silver speakers that weigh less than 1 pound total and are attached by a cord measuring 1 meter in length. The speakers themselves are small, measuring 4.25"H x 2.75"W x 2.75"D. One of the speakers has a mini-plug input that is perfect for MP3 players.
The speakers require almost no set-up or maintenance. Simply unpack them from the plastic mold packaging and set them up on your desk up to 1 meter apart from each other. Plug the input line into your MP3 player and operate the speakers by turning your MP3 player on or off. There's nothing to it!

Cost of the Sony SRS-P7 Computer Speakers
I purchased my speakers at Target for $9.99, but in researching for this review, prices were all over the board. You can find the set for anywhere between $6.99 to $19.99, but please keep looking before you purchase them for $19.99.
Quality and Performance
For $9.99, I was not expecting speakers that would provide extreme clarity or volume. These are not the speakers to use in your attempt to throw a raging house party. But they are perfect for use at work (an office or a cubicle) or for small rooms in your house. I set mine up on either side of my computer monitor at work and they worked so well that I purchased 2 more sets: 1 for my home office and 1 for my husband's office.
The volume on these is a nice range. At the loudest setting on my iPod, these little speakers blast loud enough to bother my neighbors in the office. At the lowest volume setting, they are barely loud enough to hear over a regular speaking voice. The perfect setting for me has been right in the middle of my iPod volume selector. At this setting, I can clearly make out the lyrics of the songs from any point in my office, which is approx. 10x12 (or in a medium-sized bedroom), but anyone walking by my desk would have to stop and really tune in to determine what I am listening to.
The sound from the Sony SRS-P7 computer speakers is crisp and clear. I've had absolutely no problems with static or distortion.
I've been using the speakers at the office for over a year now and have had no problems. They are still going strong with 5 days per week usage (except when I take my well-deserved vacations). They look nice next to my computer screen, and they don't take up much room on my desk at all. They've lasted through countless errant cleaning solution sprays done by our office cleaning staff without any ill effects, other than my having to wipe sticky substances off of them once in awhile.
At home, they come in handy because they are easy to pick right up and move from room to room due to the fact that they are connected and they weigh almost nothing. I use them while cleaning house often, and when I'm done in one room, I just scoop up the speakers and my iPod and move to the next room.
I've also failed to notice any difference in the battery power from my iPod being soaked up by these speakers. My iPod, when fully charged, seems to play just as long on these as it does with just headphones or when used in the car or with my jogging stroller, which is many hours of use. I can listen to the iPod at work for about 2.5 full work days without re-charging it.
Final Thoughts
I'm giving the Sony SRS-P7 computer speakers 5 stars, because they perform exactly as intended. They provide a nice sound quality within a small range area, are durable, portable, and very reasonably priced. Best of all, they allow me to bring my iPod even more places without have to use headphones.
