Beware when stepping out of Wi-Fi range
Date of Review: Mar 20, 2006
The Bottom Line: Nice features but be prepared for some disappointments and frustrations.
I have had this Palm TX for a month and it works fairly well. I use it at my business and used to use Wi-Fi to check on the weather forecast while walking out to my car. BIG MISTAKE! Palm has two problem reports #40702 and #40643 dealing with Wi-Fi problems. If you lose your Wi-Fi connection, the Palm will get stuck in a loop that you can't break out of until one of the following ocuurs first: 1) The battery dies or 2) you push the reset button on the back or 3) you step back into Wi-Fi range. It is an annoyance to find my Palm with a totally dead battery the next morning because it lost it's Wi-Fi connection before I got it shut off properly.
I would prefer a cradle rather than the awkward two-horned plastic connector (why couldn't they have put in a standard mini-USB connector if they weren't going to provide a cradle???)
I put in an SD card and enjoy using the Palm as an MP3 player, but the built-in pushbuttons aren't really set up to work with the player, so you have to get the stylus out and tap on the screen. Also, I would like to be able to see what's on the SD card without having to take the card out and plug it into a computer!
In general, I feel like I am using a device that was rushed off the design table without any user testing or feedback. I'm guessing this is probably Palm's first Wi-Fi device and they took the Microsoft approach and threw something out into the market and are going to let the user's debug it for them.
If you aren't in a hurry, I would wait for the next Rev, or at least wait until a new OS version comes out to fix the Wi-Fi problems.
